Joel Abernethy Advantage Recipients, 2015

Maya, Year 5

Maya is a year five student at a school in Sydney’s south-west. She is a member of the string program at the school, where she is learning the cello. Her school music teacher, ACMF Education Manager Rachel Scott, and her cello teacher, Anatoli Torjinski, have nominated Maya for extra tuition, as she is an outstanding young cello student. Maya also sings in the school choir, plays in the school string orchestra and is an enthusiastic young musician in her class lessons!

As a recipient of the 2015 Joel Abernethy Advantage Scholarship, Maya will receive cello lessons from Rachel Scott, a highly experienced ‘cellist, primary music educator and chamber musician.

Jorja, Year 6

Jorja is a year six student at a remote school in western NSW. She is a keen trumpeter, playing the trumpet in her school band. Jorja also participates in the ACMF/Royal Australian Navy Band Online Master Classes which occur at her school. Jorja was the lead in the school musical last year (Dorothy in ‘The Wizard of Oz’) and she is a member of the school choir. This year she participated in the Riverina Band and Choral Camps, and successfully auditioned for a place at the NSW State Music Camp in Narrabeen. Jorja has three older sisters who share her passion for music and entertaining.

As a recipient of the 2015 Joel Abernethy Advantage Scholarship, Jorja will receive trumpet lessons from Paul Goodchild, Associate Principal Trumpet of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
