At Dinjerra Public School, the ACMF’s impact is moving beyond our weekly classroom music sessions. While our core program reaches every student, the school recently invited the ACMF to take over their instrumental tuition. This is a dedicated scholarship group for 30 students to receive focused lessons in guitar, piano, and voice.
The Selection: Equity and Interest
To ensure these opportunities reach those who need them most, the Principal identified students based on a combination of high musical interest and complex access needs. With 58% of the student body in the bottom two quartiles of socio-educational advantage and 68% from a language background other than English, these scholarships are a vital equity tool.
Our teaching musician, Ash, notes that the “why” behind these students is deeply personal:
- Breaking Financial Barriers: For one family struggling with the cost of weekly groceries, these lessons would be impossible without support.
- Inclusive Opportunities: One student with a hearing impairment is proving that a passion for music transcends physical boundaries.
- A First Concert Experience: One Indigenous student in the group recently attended his first-ever concert with his father to see Ed Sheeran, thanks to our partnership with Frontier Touring.
A Different Way of Learning
Ash’s scholarship sessions offer a unique “architecture of freedom” compared to the standard school day. In the music room, there are fewer rules and more encouragement to experiment.
“Music is often at odds with the rule-based system of classroom education,” says Ash. “I’m big on encouraging students to just try things and see what happens. It gives them a doorway into other cultures and a chance to discover a side of themselves they haven’t seen before.”
Skills for Life
Whether working in groups to refine a performance or practicing individually, these students are gaining more than just “notes on a page.” They are building:
- Team Skills & Self-Evaluation: Learning how to collaborate and refine their work.
- Resilience: Having a safe space to test themselves and be proud of their progress.
- Future Creativity: Practical skills that will help them write, perform, and collaborate throughout their lives.
