In the heart of the Mid North Coast, a powerful transformation is taking place through music. At Taree Public School, students, teachers, and Elders are coming together to celebrate Biripi culture and weaving Gathang words into a professional new song and film clip.

Addressing the Equity Gap through Shared Language
For many regional schools, access to specialized music programs remains a significant challenge. By providing consistent, high-quality music education in Taree, the ACMF is directly addressing equity of access. Led by ACMF’s Matt Zarb, this initiative is a vital tool for student and community connection.
Crucially, this program is inclusive of the entire school. By learning about Biripi culture and the Gathang language, students are participating in the vital work of language revival and reconciliation.
Inspiration Through Legacy and Language
The project is a tribute to Jay Davis, who spent his life advocating for the revival of Biripi culture. With the guidance of Elders like Uncle Russ Saunders, the students wrote “Biripi” to celebrate their connection to the Manning River and the sacred shark.
In the film clip, the Djarii dance group performs alongside their peers, weaving traditional movement with modern song. It is a visual representation of Uncle Russ’s philosophy of “walking together”.

The NSW Department of Education has recognised this initiative as a part of their #lovewhereyoulearn campaign. For the ACMF, Taree serves as “living proof” of our mission: when we remove barriers to access and provide a creative outlet, every child can find their voice through the power of music.
