At the ACMF, we believe that every child deserves to see a future for themselves in the arts. Recently, that vision became a reality for the students of Dinjerra Public School when the cast of MJ The Musical swapped the professional stage for the school hall.
A School-Wide Celebration
The energy was electric. For a week leading up to the visit, the entire school rehearsed Michael Jackson’s iconic “Man in the Mirror” in anticipation. When the cast arrived, students, staff, and a huge cohort of parents joined together in a powerful, school-wide singalong.
Students are still talking about that song in class and are so keen to sing it,” says Ash, our teaching musician. “But the real highlight was the dancing. Seeing the pros move their bodies in such incredible ways really lit a spark in the kids.
The Power of Representation
For a diverse community like Dinjerra, the visit was about more than just music—it was about representation. Ash noted that seeing a world-class cast from diverse backgrounds was invaluable for the students.
“It’s invaluable for our students to be able to see themselves represented in performers, artists, and professionals at the highest levels of their fields,” Ash explains.
From the Theatre to the Classroom
This visit was the heart of a broader, incredible partnership with the Michael Cassel Group. While the cast was inspiring students in the classroom, our dedicated volunteers were at the theatre in Sydney – and in Melbourne just one week later – conducting Bucket Collections.
These collections allow the public to turn their post-show inspiration into direct action, raising vital funds that allow the ACMF to bring these life-changing musical experiences to schools across Australia.
