The future of music education in Australia is shaped through high-level collaboration and evidence-based advocacy. Recently, ACMF was honoured to participate in an invitation-only Roundtable held with the Federal Minister for Education, Jason Clare.
A Personal Invitation to the Table
Susan Templeman MP, Special Envoy for the Arts organised the Roundtable. Susan, who spoke at our Gala Event last year, personally invited our General Manager, Frances Georgeson, to join this discussion.
The session brought together a powerhouse of expertise. This included leaders from the Music Education: Right from the Start initiative , such as Emily Albert and Dr. Anita Collins. The group also included representatives from the NSW Department of Education and leading academics from University sector.
The Case for Quality Music Education
The core purpose of the meeting was to reinforce a message the ACMF has championed for decades: access to quality music education from the early years is a necessity, not an optional extra.
Drawing on the invited stakeholders’ expertise the conversation focused on the evidence-based benefits of music education, specifically:
- Cognitive Development: Enhancing the overall capacity and readiness to learn.
- Literacy & Numeracy: The proven link between musical training and improved reading and mathematical skills.
- Wellbeing & Attendance: How music programs keep students engaged and connected to their school community.
Direct Engagement with Minister Clare
The Minister appeared highly engaged throughout the session. He asked insightful questions and showing a genuine interest in how we can bridge the gap in access for children across the country.
A Valued Voice for the Future
For the ACMF, this invitation reflects a deepening trust in our mission and our role as a collegiate partner. Susan Templeman MP expressed that this roundtable is a vital starting point for ongoing advocacy to improve standards and access to music education.
By bringing the real-world experiences of our students and teaching musicians directly to the ears of policy-makers, we ensure that the “on the ground” impact of the ACMF helps shape the national conversation for the next generation of Australian students.
