Music education programs often deliver unexpected benefits. But few can match the sheer spectacle of the recent collaboration at La Perouse Public School.
The Australian Children’s Music Foundation (ACMF) students were joined by the NSW Police Force Band for a concert that went far beyond the musical. It was a powerful exercise in community connection.
A Powerful Tool for Connection
The highlight of the day was a combined performance of the song “I’m Australian,“ featuring the professional police band and the excited La Perouse school choir. Check the video here.
A police representative noted that music is a “powerful tool” for engagement. Explaining that it helps “break down the barriers” between the community and the police. By showcasing the instruments and performing a wide range of music, the students get the invaluable experience of seeing and hearing a live group of professional musicians.
The Special Reinforcements
The concert was turned into an unforgettable community event with the arrival of some special “reinforcements.”. Members of the Airwing and the Dog Squad arrived post sing-a-long.
The children were thrilled to have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to interact with the police teams. Students were allowed to “crawl all over the helicopter and pat the dog.” An experience one student described as “very special because no other school gets that.”
Inspiring Future Paths
The impact of the visit was immediate and lasting, directly affecting the students’ aspirations and school engagement. The Assistant Principal said.
“In all of the children’s writing this week it has been about going on adventures in the helicopter and when they get bigger they can’t wait to join Senior Choir so they can perform with the Police Band!”
The experience also opened new career pathways in their minds: “For our bigger children they are now thinking about a career as a police officer. I do have to admit that the K-9 division seems very popular at the moment.”
The event successfully linked the joy of music and community performance to real-world career goals, providing a powerful example of the ACMF’s work intersecting with positive mentorship.
Paving the Way for Future Partnerships
The success has now paved the way for future collaboration. The NSW Police Band Director is eager to explore how they can partner with ACMF and is keen to discuss arranging more visits to other ACMF schools, turning this powerful event into a model for community engagement across the state.
