For Rebecca Bickerton, Artistic Director at Dance Stream Victoria, the arts are more than a career – they are a family legacy. Her mother is a Primary School Music Teacher, her sister is a full-time dance teacher, and her brother is a full-time member of the chorus at Opera Australia. Now, her nine-year-old son is even touring in the musical Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, playing the role of ‘Chip’.
“Music and the arts have had a profound impact on our lives,” says Rebecca. “Being able to play a small part in supporting a charity that is helping those less fortunate to access music education and instruments means a lot to me.”
This deep-rooted belief in the power of music and the arts is the foundation of Dance Stream Victoria’s annual fundraising efforts for the ACMF.
Creativity for a Cause
Since 2018, the studio has hosted its popular “Get Creative Week,” a high-energy event where students come to class sporting their most imaginative and creative hairstyles.
Students are encouraged to bring along a gold coin donation, which is then passed on to the ACMF. Over the years, the initiative has seen some truly spectacular designs, including one student whose hair was braided into the shape of a quaver (an eighth note)!
This small, fun campaign consistently raises approximately $120 each year in gold coin donations. Even during the disruptions of 2020 and 2021, the studio adapted, shifting classes online and sharing the donation link so that families could continue to contribute directly.
Every gold coin raised through “Get Creative Week” supports children who are less fortunate have access to vital music education and instruments.
