Justine Clarke and Students Share the Power of Story and Song
In a truly special event, that celebrated the power of music and storytelling, renowned entertainer and ACMF board member Justine Clarke recently visited La Perouse Public School. Justine’s visit was a highlight for students who are part of a long-running ACMF program led by our teaching musician, Rachel Scott. When Rachel reached out to Justine on behalf of La Perouse Public School Justine was quick to say yes to visiting. The visit was also part of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s (ILF) “Busking for Change” fundraising initiative,
As an Ambassador for the ILF, Justine shared a powerful story with the students. They listened intently as she read aloud the book, “Country tells us when…”. This book was written by the community from Cable Beach Primary School. Afterward, the visit came to life through music. Justine and the students performed the adapted song of the same name. This particular song captures the seasonal changes of the Kimberley. A team of ILF ambassadors, including Justine, along with Josh Pyke, Dobby, and Tehya Makani wrote the song.
The visit beautifully demonstrated the shared missions of both the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and the Australian Children’s Music Foundation. It highlighted how music and literacy can empower children. How hand-in-hand it helps them build confidence and celebrate culture. For the students at La Perouse, who have been developing their own musical voices through Rachel and the ACMF, this was an inspiring moment. After all, they got to see a beloved artist championing the very same cause they are a part of. Ultimately, this event was a powerful reminder that music can serve as a universal language. A universal language that connects us all to our own stories as well as the broader community around us. It was a truly special visit!
