Deborah Knight’s Journey to the ACMF & Music’s Importance
- Your career has been so diverse, from journalism to television presenting – what drew you to get involved with the Australia Children’s Music Foundation, and why is it so meaningful to you?
I’ve always had an interest in music and when I grow up, I would love to be a rock star! I love singing and was in choirs at school but never learnt an instrument as it wasn’t offered at my school. That’s why the work of the Foundation is so crucial. My own children have been fortunate enough to learn instruments at their own schools and it’s wonderful to see their love of music being fostered. And I guess I could never escape music. My late Father was a drummer in local bands in Coffs Harbour where I grew up, and my husband is also a drummer playing in several bands around Canberra and Sydney. His own Father played the bagpipes, so it was a very noisy house!
The Power of Music: How ACMF Connects Generations & Cultures
- Music has the power to connect people across generations and cultures. How do you see ACMF fostering that connection?
Music is a language and has such power. From the light that music can turn on in dementia patients, to the joy it brings to young children. Music can both evoke memories and create memories that are lifelong. Music is ingrained in all cultures, and it shouldn’t be a luxury, but something everyone can enjoy. ACMF fills a gap that shouldn’t be present in a country like Australia, but the Foundation makes music accessible to all. I’m humbled to be involved in spreading the word and encouraging others to support ACMF in any way they can.

- What would you say to people considering donating or getting involved in the ACMF Mission?
The ACMF mission is critical but quite simple in the end. Share and spread the joy of music to all! I know times are tough but every dollar helps this incredible organisation that exists without government support. Donating money is welcome, but so too is attending fundraisers, like the major event ACMF is holding later this year in September. Watch this space, but it promises to be great conversation and of course great music! We also welcome any volunteers who might be able to help deliver ACMF programs. There are plenty of ways you can support this terrific organisation.
