A Day Filled with the Untold Power of Music
At La Perouse Public School, I work with a choir of nearly 40 enthusiastic students, from Years 3 to 6, who choose to spend their time with me each week, united by their love of singing. This term, we prepared songs about wartime, in anticipation of ANZAC Day. We had the privilege of sharing our music with the elders at Yarra House and then with the residents of a local nursing home. It was a challenging walk, but one undertaken with boundless enthusiasm by those determined little legs.
At Yarra House, the elders welcomed us with cheers and smiles, their pride palpable. The children, in turn, were radiant, their faces glowing with a pride that only comes from connecting with and bringing joy to others. It was a beautiful exchange, a testament to the power of music to bridge generations and foster deep connections.
At the nursing home, the residents sang along with us, their eyes sparkling. Some cheered, others were moved to tears. One man, a former fighter pilot, shared how the music had stirred memories of his comrades, a poignant reminder of music’s ability to transport us and connect us to our shared humanity. The nursing home staff were so touched by the experience they’re now eager to establish an ongoing relationship with the school, inviting residents to visit regularly.
The children were absolutely buzzing with excitement; their voices filled with wonder as they recounted the moments that had touched them most. It was a powerful affirmation that they matter.
