The Australian Children’s Music Foundation (ACMF) welcomes the findings and recommendations of the NSW Joint Select Committee on Arts and Music Education and Training. The Committee’s report, released in December 2024, aligns with ACMF’s advocacy for equitable access to quality music education, particularly in public primary schools and among disadvantaged students.
In its submission, ACMF highlighted the need to address inequity in access, improve teacher training, provide pathways for musicians, and recognise the role of not-for-profit organisations. The Committee acknowledged these concerns, noting that music and the arts are undervalued in NSW schools, leading to systemic neglect and unequal access.
Key recommendations welcomed by ACMF include increased funding for music programs, expanded professional development for teachers, and stronger partnerships between schools, musicians, and arts organisations. ACMF is eager to support the NSW Government in implementing Recommendation 1, fostering partnerships with external arts organisations, and Recommendation 6, enhancing teacher support in music education.
The Committee’s recommendations mark a crucial step toward ensuring every NSW child has access to a quality, ongoing music education.
ACMF’s 2025 NSW Pre-Budget submission reinforced this and underscored music’s role in student wellbeing, engagement, and learning outcomes. We drew attention to our impact report showing our programs improve resilience, self-esteem, and academic performance.
