“Music is the universal language, the one medium that can transcend all boundaries, awaken the imagination and bring great joy!”
I wrote those words in 2002, when I founded the Australian Children’s Music Foundation (ACMF) and now, after 10 years of seeing the wonderful results our programs achieve and how music engages and inspires, there is no doubt in my mind…. MUSIC IS MAGIC!
The ACMF programs are designed to bring joy and inspiration to the lives of children who are on the wrong side of advantage. Children who have been abused, neglected, traumatised.. children who are “lost”. Music enhances creativity and imagination, self-esteem and self-expression. You need all of these attributes if you are to change your life for the better.
We give them hope and a chance to dream.
More and more, we find we are dealing with so many children and youth with mental and emotional problems. Music brings solace and hope. We have discovered in our Juvenile Detention Centre programs that kids who used to self-mutilate have found a better way to express themselves… through music.. and no longer self-mutilate. Isn’t that another incredible example of the Magic of Music?
I cannot speak highly enough of the ACMF staff and our amazing and dedicated teachers across Australia, who work tirelessly and passionately to find ways to help as many children as possible. The ACMF would not exist if it weren’t for those kind people who provide the funding we need in order to deliver our programs across Australia. Thank you one and all!
